Madhuri Gupta was working as diplomat in Islamabad embassy has been arrested for spying for Pakistan and leaking information about India.
She is 53 year old and 2nd secretary in the high commission in the press and information section. She was on a trip to Delhi when she arrested.
Officials said she she handed over classified documents to ISI Pakistan. There was no response from Pakistan for this. India and Pakistan have fought 3 wars and have a history of mistrust.
“We have reasons to believe an official in the Indian high commission in Pakistan has been passing information to Pakistani intelligence officials,” said Vishnu Prakash, a spokesman for India’s ministry of external affairs.
The Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency said Ms Gupta had been arrested four days ago after being summoned to Delhi.
She was produced in court on Monday and will remain in police custody for another five days, PTI said.
